Since the dawn of man, sex has been a pleasurable experience. Viewed as not
only a means for procreation, but also as a healthy stress reliever and a passionate
expression of love. The invention of sexual toys for women opened a door of sexual
freedom for women everywhere. Being only second to the invention of birth control pills,
vibrators and dildos allow women to experiment safely and confidently. Many people,
men in particular, state that there are more sex toys for women then for men, why is that?
It is my opinion that the answer to this question revolves around the anatomy
of human beings. Take men for example; there sexual organ is on the outside of their
body, easy to reach, easy to play with. Women, on the other hand, have a vaginal canal
and a clitoris; the two important sexual areas are not very close together. Some women
cannot achieve an orgasm without clitoral stimulation, and if you are aware of the
basic act of hetero sexual sex you can understand how the clitoris is usually ignored.
With sex toys “cum” preference; pun intended. Some individuals prefer a toy
softer to the touch; others don’t see the point in a toy unless it vibrates. This brings us
to the whole point of my essay- the many materials of sex toys.
The basic materials are:
Silicone
Silicone/Rubber Mixes
Thermo-plastic elastomer
Jelly Rubber and Phthalates
Hard Material such as hard plastics, acrylics, Lucite, glass, metal, and ceramic
Let’s start our adventure in the depths of silicone valley.
Silicone toys are soft and smooth to the touch. They are also pliable, and they
come in a wide variety of shapes and colors. Since silicone is a non-porous surface, it can
be disinfected easier then plastic. As a result, they can be used for longer periods of time
because they don’t harbor germs like other porous materials. A simple way to clean a
silicone toy is to either boil for 5-10 minutes, pop them in the dishwasher, or wash them
with soap and water. The most important thing to remember when it comes to silicone
toys is the lubricant that is used with them. Silicone lubes can melt a silicone toy, putting
a condom over a silicone toy when using silicone lube is recommended. A silicone
toy is also ideal for individuals who have environmental allergies, because silicone is
hypoallergenic.
Next up for discussion is silicone rubber mixes. Although these toys contain
silicone they are porous and do not have the same care instructions. One of the benefits of
having a silicone mixed toy is that the material will last longer without tearing. As with
the silicone toys, silicone lube is not recommended.
Thermo-plastic elastomer, unlike silicone, is slightly porous and cannot be
disinfected. Basic cleaning instruction in between uses is wash with soap and water,
but in the long run a toy of this material should be used with condoms or replace
frequently to avoid infection or a negative reaction to bacteria. Similar to Thermo-plastic
elastomer, Jelly Rubber toys are soft, porous and cannot be disinfected either. Most
sex toy companies no longer carry toys made from this material because it contains a
potentially harmful element called phthalates. Phthalates are plasticizing chemicals that
soften Polyvinyl Chlorides (PVCs) – plastics that are used in everything from building
materials, tubing, and clothing to shower curtains, and can even be found in food.
Phthalates are also used in soft plastic sex toys.
Toys made from hard materials do not contain phthalates.
The most versatile of all hard material toys is glass. Glass retains temperature extremely well and requires a
very small amount of lube for a slippery effect. Glass toys can also be heated or frozen for
an extra sexual experience. No other material, aside from silicone, easily possesses this option.
With all the scientific achievement the human race has accomplished in the past
several hundred years, it is a great achievement to have such time and effort put into sexual
objects that will be put into hard working fun loving individuals. Human beings are as
unique and delicate as snow flakes. Thanks to science, there will always be a specific sex
toy to meet their individual needs. God bless the human race, God bless sexuality, and
God bless sex toys.
